What is Kal'basse

Kal'basse is the mix of two words: "Kal" that means "to say" in the Bassa language of Cameroon and Kalbasse like french word "calebasse". This is a natural gourd that is used for different purposes troughout the world. The phylosophy of Kal'basse isassociated with the image of a gourd because we never know its content, it can basically be Various. So is our music a mixing of Afro pop, Acoustic, Chanson, Jazz and RnB. Our music is the traduction of our various influences. Kal'basse members are from different countries. Cameroon, Germany, Congo.

The creation and steps

Kalbasse has been created 15 years ago in Yaoundé (Cameroon), by two young students: Roland Ngom and Bertrand Eba. The group was called African brothers.

The Pushing factor has been the winning of a national competition of the best song related with environment conservation. Although this competition at the beginning was just a kind of fun for us, it gave us the necessary incentive to make things more seriously, since professionnal groups fom the whole coutry were present to this competition organized by the PNUD.

The group then followed various ways recruiting additionnal members such as the actual Guitarist and drummer of the group macase in Cameroon.

The style was totally free, it is much more honest to say that we were still looking for an identity in our music, rotating between a soft rock, various african music and Jazz. This was the period of "Rising Spirit" the second name of the group.

Although ramaining  very opened to various african rythm and  jazz, the new  Kalbasse is finally the reflection of individuals musical perceptions of the members. At this level Sarah Rothfluss has brought a totally new inspiration with compositions much more inspired from pop music. The actual Kalbasse philosophy is instrumentally oriented towards acoustic sounds, where guitars, piano and voices are the guidelines.

Michel Mokelo Has brought all his experience as professionnal drummer, His deep feeling of african roots constitute an considerable added value to our musical philosophy. This allows a total back to african feeling.

Kal'bass takes profit of all the jazz experience of Simon Mayer, while Nathan allows the exploitation of African rythm in a pure native way.
